You should never pass your username and password by the way. Registering to gain access to the forum is relatively easy and free. No, I do not believe that it is unfair or unjust to require a login. The forum is full of great posts from professionals with widely diverse backgrounds and experiences.
I may be biased, but personally I think this is one of the better forums out there (in our subject areas at least). Logging in for free isn't a ripoff, it's a bargain.

Had this been the case when I first started "lurking", I would probably not hung around for very long. In fact, one of the reasons I'm here is because I was able to read and "size-up" the forum with out having to sign up.
While I'll agree people
may be more inclined to post their thoughts on thread if logged in, not being able to read threads is certainly not an inducement to sign up to begin with.
I don't know about anyone else, but If I'm researching a topic and come across something that looks interesting but it requires me to "sign up" in order to read it... I move on.
