"Avatars and Emoticons"
I am wondering why this forum does not allow avatars and emoticons? They are fun and creative. Of all the forums I have seen or joined, this is the only one that has that strict rule and insists on photos which members often obviously alter.

Terri,
If that is not your real photo posted in the other forums, I will just break down & cry...I would always click on those posts just to be enthralled by your beautiful facade...aaarrrggg! (smiling)

My eyes need checking...
Howdy Clicken,
I'm so sorry, this whole time my eyes were viewing your nick as "Chicken", then Cyanide pointed out my error, now I realize its "Clicken". I really need my eyes examined.
BTW - avatar idea rocks for WPW Forum.
Cheers!

On a serious note, the WebProWorld stands for WebPROFESSIONALWorld, so if these forums really want to keep the word "professional" in their name, it is a good idea to start with avatars. Some users can go overboard with them (sometimes lowering themselves to cool MSPaint pictures or adult material) and that isn't the point here.

Hi Justin:
If you look at some of the "photos" on this forum, they are obviously not real pictures of members. Some members doctor their photos creatively. "Adult" avatars are not allowed on any forum to which I post.
I do not see how having a bit of fun with an avatar decreases the professionalism of a forum.

Although some member photos are altered somewhat, you are still able to have a little fun with them still keeping your face on the photo (ie: mikmik, thehappysmoker). If you want to uphold professionalism members should have the right to see the face of who they are talking to, and that's what is mostly seen here (few exceptions).
Besides, isn't there fun in doctoring a photo?

Many members have chosen not to post any photo at all so you are therefore unable to see who they are. If I thought doctoring a photo was fun, I would have done so.

I think photos add something to a forum, personalizing discussions, although the addition of those graphics does slow down page loading on an already slow-to-load forum. However, opening up the selection of avatars to member selection invites either dumb (and unprofessional) graphics or offensive graphics -- it is only a matter of time before some idiot abuses it and then you have the problem of having to police the avatars as well as the posts -- just not worth the hassle.
Smilies, in my opinion, are rather silly and almost always abused. While on occasion they may possibly add some emphasis or clarity to a post, on any forum which permits them you will again see inevitable abuse... posts which contain little more than a long and juvenile string of smilies (especially those doubly annoying animated smilies) as a reply to the previous post. Once again, they slow down page loading and 99% of the time add absolutely nothing useful.

Minstrel:
Since you stated that "Smilies, in my opinion, are rather silly....." , I find it rather amusing that in at least 12 of your posts on Digital Points Forum, you have chosen to add a "silly smilie" to each post.

Me use smilies? ;o)
If they are there, people use them, including me. But I still think that in most forums they are abused -- first by the quantity available and second by the number per post. At least at Digital Point, you are required to post a message of a minimum length, which makes it difficult to post nothing more than a dumb line of animated smilies -- be honest: can you not think of several forums where this is common and where you can find several replies to an initial post which are nothing more than multiple smilies?
They are silly.

Avatars are certainly amusing, but do give a forum a "crazy in-crowd" look.
Real photos communicate better to me.
But surely none of the photos are real - I mean they are all way too charming and vivacious ...
... and when my photoshop skills improve I will submit my own picture.
On the other hand, I don't think photoshop will be enough - sigh.

Some of the supposed "real photos" of some members look like something I would not want to see allowed to run loose on the street. hahahaha
