This answer reminds me of the comedy sketch where there is a famous politician in the studio who is asked by the interviewer something like " do you think that .... should be allowed" and the famous politician instead of giving a long answer with all relevant points for and against just says "yes" the interviewer then says "thank you" and program fades to titles.

Opera mini and other browsers on mobiles will format your site to be viewed on a phone, however there is a trend towards smartphone views (480 x 320) and faster load times.

You need provide a means to detect who(what) is viewing your website and provide an alternate CSS(or xslt) for the relevant browser - mobile or PC.

I haven't had a problem with my smartphone, HTC PRO, but some sites are painfully slow to load owing to heavy graphics and flash.

You don't have to do your site over.

Check out yahoo.com and then go to yahoo.mobi

keep flash out of it, make sure .jpgs are small; if you're in ecommerce, you're call to action should probably be directed at a phone order or to get the person to check out your .com website later when they get home or in front of a desktop.

I think of it as a 2-dimensional website (North/South), literally like you were writing Chinese - remember, not everybody has an iPhone

To see how formattting is critical to render websites 'correctly' for mobile phones, check out a players baseball statistics in a regular web browser and then do it from your phone. Baseball stats are typically rendered horizontally, so when the stats 'go vertical' it messes up the formatting and you really can't read the stats (about the only thing you can make out is batting average, ERA or just some really basic stats. The rest is just a blurb of numbers that you can't relate to the proper column.

I'll let you guys know when I launch my .mobi and its results. Honestly, I'm not expecting much, but you never know.....

That does raise another important issue, that of how to test the rendering on the target platform(s). Developers have a number of options with regards to traditional platforms; but, what is available for use here?

Here is one site: Emulator | dotMobi
looks like a 176x122 screen.

another: Mobile Emulators | mobiForge

Development sites like xda-developers ans manufacturer sites also offer emulators however many of these are for java development.

I have a collection of old phones that I can hook to my computer via usb, but this is also for game development. You might try to install a WAP server on your computer - Tutorial about Setting up WAP Servers for Hosting WAP 2.0/1.x Sites. Learn about Free WAP/Web Servers and MIME Types

yea use small images...

I use my cellphone to browse the web sometimes... (it's not a smartphone just another cellphone ) if I could give you any advice.. (from a customer point of view). i would say to have your mobi. pages as simple as possible, no flash, no javascripting.,.. just simple basic html and only have small amount of content on each page.....

title

link
link
link

content

link
link
link
link

Sometimes i go to a site on my phone and it's so much content on the page [like walmart.com] that the phone freezes up and I have to take the battery out to powerdown...

For cell phones emulators, there are a few. Blackberry and OpenWave (which makes the browser used on Nokia phones as well as others) both have fairly good emulators. The Opera Mini emulator is absolutely atrocious - it is just a web browser with a jpeg of the phone and an iframe for the screen - use it to test formatting and size, nothing else.

Also, good to note if you use Adobe Dreamweaver, their software includes a mobile phone previewer, which is called Device Central. A bit hard to use, it offers a wide range of phones that you can test on - if nothing else, it can give a good idea of how pages will be laid out on different cell phone screens.

well wize and dozzen you both are right

in short of this review is that we need to develop the mirror of site or you can say a sub domain with mirror site and very light version .

and
but the question is that mobile advertsing of website and products to direct link to the website via wap.

so how to establish this stuff

might be i am confused or mess up but the thing is that how do these techno freak do such great stuffs????
like sms marketing from websites ,

From article at Agency Byte iPhones, Netbooks, and Websites :

"If you design websites, build websites, or own a website, you might want to take note: iPhone users are surfing the web with a 480×320 screen resolution. The popular Blackberry 8830 has 320×240. And netbook users are surfing the web with resolutions as small as 800×480."

I was also interested at first when I heard of the hype but since new technology are always advancing, converting your site to mobile compatible it doing it backwards. Mobile phone are becoming like computers which can surf the web like a laptop so why bother to convert them? Besides, the mobile traffic is not that much either.

you have a valid point here. most modern sites are not easily viewed on the small screen of a mobile phone. I find that even after a few minutes you get revolving eyeballs & the the process is painfully slow unless the site is specificity designed for the purpose and is text only with no advertisements. I avoid where I possibly can.

Cell phones are, and always have been, computers, even though they may not look and/or act like "normal" computers. They are merely specialized ones, using operating systems & applications that are more akin to embedded ones than to general purpose ones.

As cell sizes of the circuits etched into the chips shrink, they will be increasingly powerful, capable of supporting OSes & apps with a wider range of capabilities, making them, other than their size, increasingly indistinguishable from "normal" computers.

One need look only to the evolution of portable computers for evidence of such an inevitable trend.

in my experience, with a good mobile browser, i was happy to view most webpages which are not designed specially for mobile.

i am using G1 mobile, the browser is smart and display the webpages in the best way.
