Default password protected pages

I haven't done this for years and hope someone can provide some help.

A new client has reps around the country and wants to have an area where they can log into with passwords.

Does anyone know of a good program for password protected areas of a website with multiple options for passwords.

I'm pretty rusty at this and would appreciate it if someone could point me to an idiot-friendly program.

Thanks in advance for any help on this.

I use this, and it is great.

anyone have any free solutions? especially solutions that can be added to a page easily. AJAX / php type stuff would be neat.

For password protection, I like to use the .htaccess password to secure the folder access. That is if your host allows you to have the access to do so.

It's not free, but an SSL cert would be needed to avoid sending basic auth passwords in cleartext - with this addendum the .htaccess solution becomes a very solid choice.
