does number of hits help raise a site's SE profile

Here's my question. Does the number of ordinary hits help raise a site's profile for SEs? I'm not sure how an SE would know, but Google Analytics is obviously counting where it is set up on sites. Is there any indication that the more hits received, the more significant that site would be viewed? Or in fact would it be, under GA, the reverse - one-page hits would be discounted as not providing what the hitter wanted. Just wondering.

Not directly, no.

However, if your site has something useful to offer, people will link to it eventually and you can slowly build up your IBL base (and by extension, your SERP rankings.)

For example, if cbp sees your site and really likes it, he might add it to the DMOZ directory somewhere. (And no, that's not a promise on his behalf, so don't spam the guy with a thousand requests.)

Thanks, cbp (the loquacious one), and Adam. I didn't think so, but I have some teenage blogger somewhere who lifted a photo from my site to use as background, not as a saved image, but as a link. So every time they open their blog, or one of their friends does, I get a hit on the image. As we have plenty of bandwidth, it doesn't worry me; I was however about to ask them to just take the image, but thought that maybe, somehow, the hits might help. Now I have to decide if the actual link is worth the bandwidth, which I think it is as it can't hurt.

PS: Adam, I've given up on DMOZ after more than two years of waiting, (and even a nice email from someone there way back when they used to have their contact line), even though there aren't any other sites in the US providing what we do.

I get a hit on the image

When that happened to me, I just changed the image on my page to a dfferent one and changed the file name of the one they were hiting temporaily to a pornographic one ... they stopped doing it.

what category is your site in? I've generally not had much of a problem getting sites into DMOZ - eventually.

I've found the secret is to drill down as far as possible.
