    I guess anything new takes time to get used to, as a creature of habit , I totally get why people are currently less likely to click in the real time results when they are in one of those little updating boxes, it is just out of the norm and being used to scanning the ordinary format of results, I guess I still do that, even being aware of real time results, i cant remember ever having clicked on them as of yet, although I sometimes use the "latest" option to sort results.

    But...I think its just a matter of time...especially as the web gets fuller of out of date info, these results will become more recognised as being relevant.

    That article said that 80% of people click on what instantly appeals to them, wow, makes page title and description meta tags really important in that case...i might rephrase mine to include..click here..click here pleeeeeeasse

    Part of the problem with this particular diagram is that real time results are not always that far down the page ... I have seen about halfway down the page.

    I know that they are effective for marketing, though. I did a press release last week for a client and he got a couple of calls.

    I'll suppose Google isn't seeking to get too much attention with the real time search results as if they were more important that other factors they'd be a the top.

    Maybe they just wanted to get ahead of the game, build a buzz as many thousands of marketers are experimenting with it and selling services related to real time search results to their clients and at least give their users something interesting to check out if their search is related.

    If 80% or more people click the first result in search then putting real time search results at the 5th to 8th spot might be OK and not affect their revenue etc. Maybe...

    Given that Real Time results are limited to being derived from a finite set of sources, they can be of use re. branding only to the extent that a brand appears on one of such sources.

    @full house

    Look at the study. Most don't use real time search results. But the study is not very representative because there were only 44 participants.

    But if the real time search results are shown at the top left of the SERPS instead at the bottom or the right site they will get into the focus.

    Re: Real time search results - really good?

    Thus far ive found the real time results to be ok for looking at what people are chatting about and just watched them scroll, i dont think ive clicked on them yet and they really dont instill much confidence in me with thier hidden URL's etc.
    Far more irritating are these stupid damn stars that keep popping up because of my bookmarks! - a search for "edit business listing" brought up a job search website and a dog community! how is that relevant to my search? sometimes things just move backwards instead of forwards!

    Yea I agree. People will not know the difference for awhile. I think user behavior will change over time.

    But, the OP's question is regarding branding.

    Given that Real Time results are limited to being derived from a finite set of sources, how is user behavior a factor?
