site disappears after changing page title

Hi,

About 2 months ago my website dropped in Google from SERP 6 to approx. 36 after I changes some alt tag descriptions. I cannot seem to regain my first page ranking. I have heard about the -30 penalty. Is that a real thing?

Also, something I have noticed is, if I change the website title and H1 tag from "Blue widgets, didgets, and gidgets" to "Blue widgets" my website disappears all together. Does it take some time for Google to re-index the site after changing the page title or is it being penalized?

When I moved town and changed by title - and website content - from "web design town a" to "web design town b", my site spent 4 months at position no 9 for "website design town b" (the place it would probably have been had it been a new site) in spite of the fact that many of the other websites were less optimised with fewer links; then after 4 months the site suddenly rose and within 2 weeks was no 1.

So my - admittedly uneducated - belief is that changing the title/page keywords can sometimes result in a penalty (maybe just site being treated like a new site to stop people getting round the sandbox by buying old domains???) but that this penalty is temporary.

On other sites I have "experimented" with different title keywords and got away with no problems.

I have not seen a site "disappear".

The only other thing I personally have heard of is that - if you get a penalty for spamming - Google does drop you 30 places - so yes this might be the case if you crammed keywords into your new alt text.

Maybe its better to change the content or update it so that google will love your page and see new page or content to be crawl.

If you can provide the URL then more and more help you can get, without URL its like hitting the Target with covered Eyes.

I will not call, the drop in ranking after changes title tag, a Penalty

If you make major changes in your site [changes in coding, content, title etc tags, design], then you may see a temporary drop in ranking. In most cases, you will see the ranking restore after sometime.
