Why Toolbar PR is Not Important - More Mythology

Myths and Myth-conceptions are on my mind. I found myself in another forum this evening, and there was a sticky with this title: Toolbar PR and WHY it is NOT important

    And it starts out:

PageRank is one factor among many in the algorithm. It also has something to do with how deep Google will crawl your site. There is some value in having more PR, but...
I didn't realize PR has anything to do with crawl. Am I wrong? Maybe there is a correlation?

    It works like this **Chuckle.**
The more links you have pointing to your site - the deeper Google searches to find out ' why the heck is everyone linking to this site?'

In this post by Matt Cutts:

Straight from Google: What You Need to Know

Read the 14th Slide. It is a graph that tells us that: Google crawl rate increases as PR increase.

Re: Why Toolbar PR is Not Important - More Mythology

I have heard that "pure" Page Rank, a metric similar to toolbar Page Rank, is actually an important factor in a few things relating to crawling and indexing:

    1. As mentioned, your crawl rate.
    2. The crawl rate of encrypted content.
    3. The size of pages that will be indexed.

Basically, although Google wants as big a picture of the web as possible. However, Google also wants to get the information as efficiently as possible. So, the weight of your inbound links, your page rank in other words, is one of the most important factors in how much of your content is crawled, decrypted, and even placed in the index. Indexing is one of the better documented examples, though, where most sites have a limit of 512Mb/page, which grows to 2MB or even more space allotted to pages with the highest Page Rank.

Just to be even more controversial, there is an opposing factor - load speed. The higher your PR, the more content Google will index faster. The longer your load time, however, the less often Google will recrawl your content.

But remember that a Bot sees a page different from us. The page may with styling, images etc be 1 Mb, but the Bot may parse out everything except what is in the body (the pure content) and end up with 100 kb to index.

Actually, CrankyDave drug this out of Matt Cutts several years ago on his blog when we were all over there arguing about indexing and crawl rates.. Probably in 2006 or 7 I think.. When he was at his old hosting company his indexed page count kept dropping and one of the reasons Matt suggested that could happen was the number of links and depth of links.. They were used as a signal of the importance of a site and how deeply the spider should crawl..

PageRank is entirely connected to backlinks. How could PR not matter, and links do?

I think PR is still a factor but its not that important... they give weight on other aspects than PR.
