    Recommendations for PDF

Notwithstanding the serious foothold that Adobe has in this market. Could someone guide me to perhaps an OpenSource or other PDF programme that is functionally complete both from a creation and a reading level?
Yes...I do realize that you get what you pay for!

    Thanks for your help.

I was simply asking for considered opinion based on experience that a natural search does not deliver; I was not asking for a dismissive arrogant response.

    Re: Recommendations for PDF

What specific capabilities are you looking for? Will you be creating PDF documents from scratch, or will you be editing existing PDFs? Do you require security on the documents? Will you be using some of the more advanced features of PDF such as forms and/or version control, or just looking for a way to distribute basic documents in a platform independent method?

There is a great variety in PDF creators and editors, and the best solution will really depend on the parameters of your project. As far as readers though, even most of the high end PDF creators only have very basic reading capabilities, and then link to Adobe Acrobat as the full reader.

    Re: Recommendations for PDF

    Thank you for this Wige.

I write medical articles, papers and some fictional works and have been doing so in Microsoft Word. The printing community is now asking that the work be put up in PDF format, apparently it makes their job easier. Also, some of the short stories that I create are shipped off to clients and there have been instances where their systems did not allow the opening of the document (no idea why that would be) as an email attachment.
Primarily, my use is to create a document that can be very short or extremely long (up to 700 pages)
I have no intentions at this time to use the PDF for form creation or anything other than outlined above but as you point out there are a large number and I just need a direct route to something that is efficient in its use. I use Adobe Reader so I don't require the programme to read for me.

Thank you once again for your help.

Try to start Google suggest with:

    1. pdf creat
    2. pdf convert

Regarding your answer to me. If you go to the wordpress forum it is regarded as impolite to ask before you have done

    1. A site search
    2. and or a general search

    May be you did that.

    Re: Recommendations for PDF

First, for some places not accepting your documents, there are ways that Office formatted documents can contain viruses, so to be extra careful some places simply do not accept those types of attachments.

Well, there are a couple of simple solutions that I have worked with for creating PDFs that will probably work for you. I am not sure if these solutions will be ideal for the medical side of it, but for general conversion of a document to PDF, they should work for you.

First, if you use Microsoft Office 2007 or later, you can download an addon from Microsoft that will allow you to save your document as a PDF file instead of a Word file. It is important to note that once you save the file as PDF you will no longer be able to edit it, so make sure you save a Word version as well. You can download this addon for free from here: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

Second, there is a print driver that you can install that adds a PDF writer to your list of printers. To turn your document into a PDF file, you click print in your editing software, then select PDF Writer, and you will be prompted for a file location, and instead of printing the document, the driver saves the file as a PDF on your computer. You can learn more about this option, also free, here: CutePDF - Create PDF for free, Free PDF Utilities, Edit PDF easily;. I will mention that this software does take a bit of configuration, as there is additional software to install, but it is a fairly easy, and well documented, procedure.

I use CutePDF for sending out invoices and other documents. Since it's a printer, you can convert any file to PDF just by printing it. If you don't need to use forms and the like, this is a simple, elegant solution.
