I know this is a common question here but I have to ask. we are having an issue with Bluehost as one of our sites seems to be down more then it is up over the past few months. We have a few accounts with HostGator and have not had any issues but do not wish to put all of our eggs into one basket. what is a good hosting provider that is in the same ball park of pricing as Hostgator and Bluehost?

All the hosts you listed are big oversellers. If you feel good with HG, you can go with them again, just ask them to create the new account in different server.

I myself don't use Dreamhost, but I know many people choose DH, when their sites are not big. You can check them out. That's the only name I feel a bit good when asking for oversellers. Otherwise, you should limit your requirements, and we can have more vendor names for you to choose.

IMO you should ask some simple questions before you change hoster. I would start like this:

1. How fast are you upgrading to new versions of PHP?
2. Which version of MySQL do you provide? Do you support iMySQL functionality?
3. Which XML technologies do you provide?
4. How easy is if for me to install my own software?
5. Do you provide automated installers like Fantastico ?

I have three hosters in alphabetic order:

1. Domainnameshop Fast to update PHP and reliable Norwegian hoster, but expensive. Very professional and helpful personell.
2. Webhotell og domener til lavpris - webhotell, domener og e-post kr 9,- pr. mnd Relatively fast to upgrade PHP, professional Danish hoster. Difficult to install your own software. Helpful minimalistic personell. Relatively cheap. No access to cPanel, but if you know how things function you don't need it. Easy install toolbox.
3. Website Hosting, Affordable Web Hosting, Ecommerce Web Hosting, JSP Web Hosting by ImHosted.com Getting better and better. Very much for little. Many add on domains and databases. My main hoster. Helpful and service minded personell. Fantastico ++

I need all three for different purposes and I may need a fourth soon.

Whats your requirement are you looking for reseller account or shared account?

Sorry for the delay.

To be honest the site in question does very little sales "because of me and lack of time to promote it like I should" so I'm not looking for dedicated hosting and would stay with a shared plan until sales pick up and warrant me to change. The site in question is also a very basic site and does not use php, sql, Ruby, does not have a blog, and is a hand coded html static site, with an offsite cart.

All in all. All I'm looking for is what everyone promises.

Good up time.
Fast load times.
Up to date modules like Apache, php, sql etc.
Good tech support. I do not mind waiting as long as it is not too long.
No run a round. Just tell me the truth with no BS. If your stuff is getting old and it is breaking then say so dam it!
No lies from sales.
Must be able to show track record. "less than a few years old, not going to consider you"
PCI compliance major plus.

That's it. I do not think I'm asking to much am I?

I'm leaving Blue Host due to chronic down time. "my site is down at least once a week for at least 2 hours" They were good until the downtime started, and I would stay if the downtime stopped, but so far every time it goes down, I am given the run around, and sometimes the same reason verbatim as for the issue as I was given for a previous issue from a different support tech.
I left Ipower due to 1 hour hold times on tech support, and their site got hacked along with mine and many others on that node.
I left Network Solutions due to they lied about being PCI compliant on a shared plan. If you call them today they still say they are, but they are not.

Sorry I'm rambling but I can not get my head around why it is so hard to find an honest hosting provider. So far the only one I have found is Host Gator. I have had down time but very little. They maintain PCI compliance on shared plans like they said they did. Tech support is good. They try and stay up to date. This is why I have 7 sites with them but I do not want to put them all there, as I do not want to put all my eggs in their basket.

Look at your requirements it seems a shared plan is fine for you.
