Thats a shocker!

I have to admit I was not aware Sun had been struggling.

Although never touching a Solaris system since Uni, Sun have always had a special place in my heart as the developers of Java, my primary language, and the Solaris operating system on which I was weaned, and because they werent Microsoft! (I am certainly not one of those anorack wearing, virus-writing anti-Microsoft peeps).

This demonstrates the spreading power of Linux, and demonstartes how things are likely to change in the future.

Who knows, in the next 5 years if Sun revenues continue to fall and Linux continues to rise, we might end up with Suncrosoft.

ms have done this countless times, they rip companies off then settle with them.

they therefore get the technonology cheaper, costs a lot less to steal the technology then pay the penalty than it does to r&d the product.

They have done it many times and will keep on doing it as long as people used their crap systems.

they wiped out netscape who were one of the earlier and best browsers, they screwed sun, they screwed apple several times even stealing the code from apple's quicktime to put into their windows media.

they have done it time & time again then afterwards they 'force' the company to partner with them in fighting other competitors, again like making apple use their ie browser in return for a 'collabaration'.

they are very savvy and know the weak spots of the companies they go after.

As they say "Keep your friends close and your enemies closer!" I never thought I would see the day that Scott McNealy would sign an agreement to partner with Microsoft!!! What is this world coming too??? Hopefully this deal will put Sun on the road to financial recovery. After reporting lost earnings for the last 6+ quarters they need some type of kick in the pants to get them in gear. The fear of becoming SunSoft or Microsoft Systems....should be motivation enough:~)

Sun also announced that based on preliminary financial results, it expects revenue for its financial third quarter, which ended March 28, to be about $2.65 billion. Net loss, excluding one-time items, is expected to be in the range of $750 million and $810 million, or $0.23 to $0.25 per share. Excluding one-time items, which take into account cost of layoffs, net loss for the quarter would range between $200 million and $260 million, or a net loss per share range of $0.06 to $0.08.

Doesn't seem like much of a struggle to me LOL This will be really advantageous to Sun, since MS is paying them. The only thing out of their pocket is the agreement, and they get access to MS code, MS certification for their Opteron servers, and the ability to integrate things like Java server technology with MS server technology. Although rivals for a long time, it sounds like a good deal for consumers and it was something many of both companys customers asked for.

Again, I ask...the END OF WHAT? If you mean Sun, it's not going anywhere.

Those of you who seem to like bashing Microsoft for everything need to wake up and smell the java.

I think Java smells better than C#.

Its hard not to have a dig at the biggest company, owned by the richest man in the world ...
Especially when they could be doing things a lot better instead of concentrating all effrorts on money-making.

Thanks, man, I agree. I was starting to think that MS is the devil incarnate with the way people react.
I do believe, that by settling (I read recently), that MS frees up over 53 BILLION (USD) in assets.
And smell the java is right, I see it as part of almost all things future in the world of webservices, content mangement, etc.
It is cross-platform, non-OS specific technology - that vfaulkner alludes to - is easier to learn than 'C', or VBS for that matter.
Now if I can only figure out the JavaBeans IDE...

PS. Already, a month ago, the percentage of OS's overall used on servers worldwide had begun to change in MS's favor. For the first time that I ever recall, the total (as a percent) actually rose for MS, and held steady or dipped for Apache on Linux.
Microsoft has aggresively been promoting Win2003 server for a while now, and has provided mondo SDK's for .NET development for free lately.
MS is also about 50-50 with Apache for SSL server usage - a sign that business and big money have been associated with Windows more than people realize, as a reliable platform.
Also, the announcement yesterday of a Trojan that only infects Mac's may put a little perspective into the views of the Microsoft bashers that blame Redmond for everything evil.
It is not good when the vandals of the world target anyone or thing, and I hope that the naysayers can show better judgement by incorporating proper security into their systems more completely than the general computer users have.
