Re: Top 5 Must Have Plug Ins for WordPress

Interesting to see the lack of social networking tools on here and how many people need to use a plugin to add Google Analytics - unless there's something I'm missing?

    My five:

    Akismet
    Google XML sitemaps
    All in one SEO
    Sociable
Twitter Tools (almost all my clients have Twitter accounts now)

But I also tend to add a Digg button, Facebook share button and TweetMeme button within the code for every Post as well - maybe I should write a plugin to do that automatically?!

I use addthis for my social buttons. I figure the smaller code and javascript links are better from an SEO pov.

    Here's one I recently found.

    SEO Slugs

It removes common words like 'a', 'the', 'in' from post slugs to improve search engine optimization. So if you load several posts with a future publishing date, your title can appeal to the readers and the plugin will automatically remove the common words for better SEO.

    Like most people in this thread, the first three plugins I install on all blogs are;

    All in One SEO Pack
    Google XML Sitemaps
WP DB-Manager (or wordpress Database Backup) depending on specific requirements

After these 3 are added, plugins tend to vary according to needs but popular ones also added can be
    NextGen Gallery
    Cryptx
    Revision Control
My Category Order (and it's mates My Page Order)
    PixoPoint Multi Level Menu

Of course there are numerous others, some good and some no longer supported that have been added, but again I find it depends on a client's requirements, but having lists here certainly helps people become comfortable with plugins that are known to work.
