It is also another way to network with potential clients and build a good reputation online.

Part of me thinks this is a lot like asking, "Which is better, food or water?"

I think both have very distinct functions. A site might well survive with only one of the two, but since optimization is the notion, I think a little of each might be the best idea.

That foolishness aside, my impression of SMO is that it's often a short-lived thing, whereas SEO has more lasting benefits. If forced to choose between the two, I'd opt for SEO, hands down. I really can't imagine a site prospering with only SMO, in today's market.

The two options are focused on pretty different things. IMHO social media can be used as a good supplement to the overall promotion pattern, but I too would not limit myself solely to that (here we have to remember that the original opposition is not completely valid since SEM involves a whole lot of other things apart from social media). No doubt that SEO is there to serve as a solid basis, a thing to rely on in the long run.

I've been told they are different aspects of website promotion that are both necessary. But I have never been one to get my fingers dirty with SMO. That's mainly because I do not have the skill or talent to execute the strategies needed. SEO is also a tough nut to crack but I have a better shot at succeeding at it

I would agree with everything said above. Don't worry about which is better. They are 2 legs of a complete marketing campaign. Use everything you possibly can to get where you need to be.

i prefer seo. as you can keep your traffic for a long time with keywords having good position.

According to me both SEO and SMO are required and have a substantial impact on the amount of traffic that it receives.Consider for example Link building.Social media sites like digg,twitter etc can give you quality inbound links.Those links are a direct result of SMO, but they can have a significant impact on search engine rankings.
SEO gets benefited from good SMO.SMO helps in making your site as user friendly as possible.
we need to find the right balance between SEO and SMO to create a user friendly site that can be easily indexed by the search engines.

I would definitely try to implement it both to the site if I could. SEO can definitely help it be visible on top SEs. And SMO would definitely bring a fair amount of traffic for a new site. But on first thing I would do is to implement the basic SEO for the site for the first month of it's launch so as to fix everything first such as meta tags, page and content optimization, redirections, etc. After that, I can proceed to the basic SMO after I acquired a few materials that I can start with.

SMO drive traffic quickly but SEO not slowly .. but once succeed in SEO is enough .. SE especially Google pumb lots of traffic if the niche is good
