Giving links of sub-domains from the main page?

Hi Members,

How far it is advisable to give the links of subdomains from the home page, rather than creating a page for the subdomains and then listing them out there, from SEO point of view?

They say that doing a reciprocal link from one page to another nets out any link juice passing between them but you also need to have a good menu structure or you'll lose visitors!
