Could any one help me out knowing the what does sitemap play role in web promtion and how to creat or integrate it . do free sitemap effect any loss or do we need to develop our own .

Sitemap - is a list of all your pages along with URLs. Sitemaps is a way to help search engines to index your site better. For example, some of your pages could not be accessible through usual links. But if you add them to a sitemap they will be indexed. Furthermore a sitemap decreases time a search engine requires to index your whole site. There is no any harm in using sitemaps. In addition you can use such services as Google webmaster tools or yahoo site explorer.

Sitemaps allow you to specify what pages a search engine should process or index. Sitemaps provide a way for Web sites to specify what pages within the site should be indexed and what new content has been added.The sitemap concept was originally developed by Google, with Yahoo! and MSN recently agreeing to use the standard. There is no loss in using sitemaps. you can use such services as Google webmaster tools or yahoo site explorer.

In addition to what has been advised, SiteMaps also help you to track how many pages have been indexed by G out of the links you mentioned in your sitemap. You can see that in your G webmaster tools section.

Also, you can set the priority of the links in SiteMap but this priority won't affect your SERPs but will tell the G bot to crawl the pages with high priority first.
