Last week WebProNews published an article about Google Friend Connect, a feature which the company hopes will make the web a little more "social". According to Google's Official Blog, Friend Connect is easy to install and visitors can sign in with the existing yahoo, Google, AOL or OpenID. From there people can create their own profile, post comments, add videos and interact with other people who join the website which has added the feature.
This seems to be a great way for webmasters to increase site traffic and the number of loyal viewers. If operating a niche site/blog depending on your niche's popularity this could be a way of setting yourself apart from the competition. If people like your site and join a social network that has been set up there, it could add to your reputation by positive word of mouth. On the downside, would users then come just to hang out with each other and not to read your content? How would one monitor the potentially large volume of users?
