SwishMax is a decent product when you are limited in funds and not looking to learn code. Keep in mind that it is a drag and drop application which means you are limited to the effects available within the application. Yes Flash MX is much more expensive, but if you are serious about learning and using Flash, nothing compares to the real deal.

Any product you buy is going to have a learning curve.
Although the learning curve is greater for the genuine Flash application, your time is much better spent learning Flash with the Macromedia product.
The other products are limited in their capabilities and you'll find that if you seriously want to develop sites in Flash the Macromedia Flash is the way to go.
Macromedia offers 30 day trial versions. Worth taking a look.

I've used various older versions (releases) of SWISH
and find it does everything I need.
Although I have not use SwishMax yet, I understand
it does have more "Flash MX" like features than
older Swish versions.
For the money - you can't beat Swish.
Here's a sample of one thing I did with Swish 2.0
Other open source Swish files:

I LOVE SWISH 2.0
I am a newbie to flash, but I love what I can do with Swish. Their support forum is great as well. If you would like to see some sites created with SWISH2 and swishmax visit. http://www.flashkit.com/board/index....ae51f6cdca01bc and go to the site check section.
If you are wanting to get your feet wet, it makes a great product to learn on. If you decide that you want to pursue flash further, you can upgrade when you outgrow the program. Nothing that you learn will be wasted as all of the flash programs use the same concepts.

Thanks to those who replied.
I have had a good p;ay with SwishMax and found it to work quite well and has scripting.
I needed the scriptig part immediately.
Macromedia will be on the list if Swish can't make the grade.
