ASP.Net web controls and search engines

I have spent most of the last year developing an asp.net web application in developer studio using vb.net. I had extensive use of web controls throughout the site. When i submitted the site to the search engines i could never get any kind of rank at all. I started using webposgold to optimize the pages and found they couldn't see the web controls at all. I reintegrated standard html controls along with my web controls and they found me pretty quickly. My question is do the search engines such as google and msn see web controls or is webposgold not capable of seeing them.
