What is jail really like?

What does the average day of jail consist of, moment by moment?
The bathroom situation, the shower situation, do you have to sleep with the light on? How often are you out of your cell? Can you really be abused by the other inmates as easily as the TV depicts?

It differs based on the prison. Typically 'jails' are for short termers who have a decent chance of getting out relatively soon, so misconduct by the prisoners is far less. The ones you see on TV are the maximum security, long termer prisons, typically run by the state they are located in. These places are absolutely vile. Federal prisons are generally better than state prisons.

Prisons are highly regimented no matter the security level; they simply become more regimented as they go up the security scale. In a maximum security prison, the minimum 'recreation' time is 1 hour.

Basically, they're not places you want to visit. As a lawyer, I've been to Northern State Prison in Newark and county jails in Bergen, Morris and Passaic Counties.

I don't think that they really show what prison is like on movies and tv shows, but there are documentaries on Discovery I think about the major prisons out there. My friends (well not all of them are convicts) who have tried a city jail for a day or two says that its just a boring place, I don't know about being stucked in a larger prison where there are lots of men who doesn't have any other ways to release some heat... lol... guess rape could happen.

Yes, indeed women are separated from men. You have some odd circumstances where pregnant women are incarcerated and after the baby is born, the baby is cared for, quite literally, in the prison. Homosexuality occurs in male prisons by desire and also as a form of power (rape).

lol, well, being locked for a long time (unless there are conjugal visits) could really drive a man crazy... well, those rapes doesn't just happen with homosexuals but with men who cannot stop their rage or hormones or whatever that is called.

lol... men raping men in prison... you'll be surprise how resourceful these inmates are... they pretty much can do a lot of things in the prison, like toothbrush(fro shank),like soap(errr, I think you get the idea.)...

^okay.. lol you didn't point out in your first post that it was men-rape. If I had known, I wouldn't be like this ???:P. Anyways thanks for pointing out
