Verisign has problems, big problems

It seems that Verisign's chickens have come home to roost.

Last week Verisign sued ICANN due to their suspension of Verisign's SiteFinder service, http://www.circleid.com/article/507_0_1_0_C/.

Cnet News is now reporting that Go Daddy has contributed $100,000 to ICANN's defense fund, http://news.com.com/2100-1038_3-5168598.html.

A new site, http://recallverisign.com are asking visitors to sign a petition that Verisign be removed as the registry for .com & .net domain names. This site lists the SiteFinder fiasco and Verisign's new "WLS" backorder service as examples of Verisgn intent to monoplize the domain name industry.

Other grass roots efforts against both SiteFinder (http://www.whois.sc/verisign-dns/) and WLS
(http://www.stopwls.com/) are active as well.

VeriSign, should have been removed as a custodian of the .com and .net domain long time ago. They did also send "billing like" renewal letters to customers of other registrars, namely GoDaddy, a predatory practice. They got sued and lost in an obvious case.

It should be clear, that a contractor for ICANN (like VeriSign is) has to abide by the DNS protocol and send error messages, if a domain is not registered. What keeps any ISP from doing the same and sending arbitrary responses to DNS requests, that surf any business purpose for the ISP. This would bring down the DNS system soon. In my view, this is a clear breach of contract and should be ground for canceling the contract.

My experience with verisign confirms the idea that they want to monopolize the market at all costs. Here is my horror story: A year or so ago, I decided to cancel my service with them and transfer it to a competitor. It took me almost two months to cancel my web service with them. I got never a chance to talk to a technician, and those who I managed to talk to, consistently reported to me that the technicians were working on my order.

Everytime I tried to cancel my service with them online, I was charged a one-year extension fee on my domain. Eventually I got an $800 dollars bill, which represented an advance payment for 32 years on my domain. I was 70 at the time, and ready to retire, and unwilling to continue working for another 32 years. I threatened to file a lawsuit, and was refunded the extra fee, but I gave up on my intention of transferring my domain elsewhere. By the way, I lost several weeks of business coming from my real estate website.

Nic, for the transfer you should register for a different domain register website, and on the new site request the transfer of your domain name.

I also had bad experiences with register websites, first of all network solutions, that is now verisign, and finally decided to become myself a domain reseller this year, with

I desire to repeat it, it is easier to have transfers done requesting them from the new online service.
