So, we're finally moving out of the 90s and getting cable internet. I just have one question, my bedroom is upstairs, and the modem is going to be downstairs, would it be best to run a cable upstairs or get a wireless router, which leads to the second half of my question how much will be affected by using a router, there is a lot of wallspace between my room and the place where the router would be. and if I run a cable, how long can a cable be?

I would say definitely get a wireless router.

A cable can be any length, when my cable was fitted, they gave me two cables as I couldnt make up my mind. One a few feet for use in same room as connection, and another about 20 meters, so I could use it in another room.

But I got a wireless router and its fine, v.useful, specially if you have more than one pc. I havent noiced any reduction in performance using the router. I use a Belkin one. The benefit, if you have two PCs, as well as being able to access the internet in another room, you can also access files on your other oc, and printer scanner etc, if its downstairs.

Actually I have just finsihed getting the cable TV as well to run in another room, internet was fairly easy, using the router, but with the cable TV, first I bought a wireless TV router, but there was alot of interference, so I had to get a cable. I bought 20m coaxial aerial cable and fixed the cable round the walls.

Then of course the remote didnt work, but you can get these remote signal routers, small units you put by each TV, that converts the remote ir signal to wireless, transfers to the other and turns it back to remote, so that even with a cable running for the TV, I can use the remote in another room.

I would actually like to know, whether you can get a splitter for a cable internet connection, the same way as you can for TV aerials?

So that if you have one socket for your broadband coming ino one room, could you get a splitter that could have two cables coming from it?

You can use a splitter but make sure it's a good quality 1ghz splitter, you will probably loose a little speed but not much.
