FireFox is new King of Browsers?

Don't know if this is the right area to post in but... have you all noticed from any sites that you run the stats of people using FireFox is started to beat out IE7? I see this often at times when checking my stats on a few of my sites. Is this a trend we will see... will IE8 turn things around? I use both just to check my sites. Firefox is the more stable Browser in my opinion.

    NO,
I rarely see FireFox in my stats. . the last time I saw a flurry of them was when webmaster forums users visited, after I posted a problem on my site.

From my directory, IE 63% with more or less equal split between IE6 and IE7 while Firefox is 23% which is probably skewed in it's favour because we review/edit with Firefox.

Best I have is 56% for IE and 40% for Firefox, so for my sites IE is still more popular than Firefox.

I rarely see FF beat IE, but if the site is "techie" enough it can happen.

I think that is because you might get a lot of SEO types to your site. I notice on my link building blog and our SEO site, FF is big. But on our sites for the general public, IE still is the big majority.

    Related thread:

    http://www.webproworld.com/other-eng...tml#post349928

Read that thread two times to understand that:
    1. I have worked in large companies where we were forced to use best practices. For that reason:
    2. I should seriously think of blocking members using some browsers on my extranet.
    3. It may save them and their clients money.
As long as a browser renders normal pages (especially pages following good web standards) normally, there is only one argument:

    Security (See P.S. below).

Note: I rank sites, forum posts and articles.

    Excercise:
Tell me the difference between the security models used in the three browsers. You find hints in the above link.

P.S. Security, is the only criteria used when I rank browsers. The rest is cosmetics.

I can say at the last company I worked out we had a 1% FF rate when I started. I said well because the site does not render in FF. They assumed the low rate was because no one used FF LOL. Well two years later that same company (I still do some stat review) has a FF rate of over 25% and an increase in users of over 50%. While it is not taking over IE, it does show that making sure your site renders in more than IE can have a significant affect on visitor rates.

In my site (Just Free Books) Firefox is used by 33,32% of the users and IE by 61,1%. The most use IE7.

http://asiapac.com.au/images/asiapac..._2008_0213.jpgMine is a small site that gets 100 to 200 visits per day, and I've been tracking browser share since I set it up in 2002 (or maybe it was 2001) ... See Asia/Pacific Computer Services - IT products, services + many vital resource links or its backup/mirror site Asia/Pacific Computer Services - IT products, services + many vital resource links

Browser share fluctuates noticeably from day to day, as you'd expect with a modest visitation rate, but the Firefox share currently seems to have stabilized at around 25 percent or so (sometimes more, sometime less, usually ranging between 20 and 30 percent), which is pretty much what Rafael Robinson is seeing.

Also in general accordance with Rafael's figures are the IE6 and IE7 shares. (It's somewhat surprising, but not too much, that IE6 share still exceeds the IE7 share well over a year after IE7 was released.)

Here is today's Browser Share chart, as recorded by Site Meter - Counter and Statistics Tracker ...

In a similar vein, here's the site's Operating System Share chart for today (Vista is sloooooowly building up) ...

If you want to delve back a bit further, you can see some older browser share charts at various places (every 3 to 6 months or so) in one of my blogs: Notes tone unturned

    Cheers, Tony Austin.

For tech orientated sites it's more likely but usually IE takes the cake, at least for now.
