    Exclamation Google AdWords cold callers

"A Google Groups member reports that he has recently gotten a call from a company called Wisdek that promised to deliver high-quality ads for a fee. He wasn't interested, but they proceed to show him that they could deliver. After asking for a few short keywords and ad copy, he checked Google for the terms a few hours later and was surprised to see that his ad was actually up there on the top of the search results. Is this tactic a scam? By seeing the top rankings, why wouldn't you want to sign up with them"?

I've seen this with one of my clients. They get the site up for a day, tell the client to look - how great that you're now top of Google, now pay us monthly for the service. Surprise surprise the ad disapears from Google within a few days and you're locked into a contract.

Adwords means nothing in this regard.

They pay 10X what they would to get to the top.

Then set it to whatever, or to nothing once you sign up.

Why pay someone to work the strategy...you can do it yourself.

Hint: Google owns Blogger.com so when you post an entry on a blog hosted there (mindful of URLs and keywords, of course) you help elevate page rank temporarily.

Blogs fall off fast, too. So rank dies fast from that method unless you post regularly.

I got a call from these Wisdek guys day before yesterday (01/22). When they call you the first time, they say they are from Google. When they call back (after setting up your keywords) they say they are calling on behalf of Google. Regardless, I think they are mis-representing themselves by leading the would-be client into thinking they are getting a call from Google.

Anyway, the whole scam revolves around the fact that your keywords must be geo-targeted. They will not sell you a package for just the keywords. It must have your city/state attached to the keywords. I goy these guys to shut up when I told them to look at the top four organic results for what they were trying to sell me for $350.00 a month.

It was my understanding that AdWords set up for a campaign was geo-targeted as part of the steps.

If it is easy to do, everyone would do it.

And if you could just pay your way to the top, you would be AOL in 1990's not Google in 2008.
Even if it does work temporarily it will never last.

If someone finds a way to compromise google and then exploits that technique. Google will do whatever they can to stop it.
It compromises the integrity of their search relevancy and ultimately thier core business.

If it sounds too good to be true, it usually is.

I wouldn't trust them without first checking them out at the BBB and then investigating on the web if there are complaints about them.
