This morning I learned of a new type of software that has the potential to put every SEO expert in the world out of work. No, it's not going to replace humans with software but if allowed to continue it will destroy the very medium in which we all work. #1 My goal wasn't to promote my blog, my goal was to point out a real problem that is the biggest threat to the Internet today.

#2 I've been contributing to this forum, asking questions and answering questions for several weeks now and deliberatly don't add my signature because my goal has been to participate and learn rather that promote my blog.

No go read the link and see if you can figure out the actual threat before your job is gone.

Your signature reads "SEO Web Design by Cyber Key" which leads me to think you are a web professional. Automated Commenting Software has the potential to cause a catastrophic failure of the Internet in which case web professionals will have the most to loose.

As the author of multiple books and full partner in the largest organizational blog network in the world I've been accused many times of going over the top when it comes to promotion, sometimes I just need a break. I realize that there is a certain marketing benefit to being outrageous with thread, blog, article, etc., titles, but the jobs really aren't at stake with some very minor adjustments to the comment posting process..

And yes, I am an SEO ... but have very few blogs in my portfolio ... so, I don't feel a threat ...

However, billyjones, your post did feel a little spammy - as you anticipated - which is why I responded as I did.

And your reason for not promoting your blog isn't flying with me.
But that's your business ...

Automated trackback spam has been in existence for several years but to my knowledge this kind of automated comment spam is somewhat new and it has the ability to get past most of the tricks used to block it.

Over 50% of the cost of operating the Internet is being consumed by spam. 75% of all e-mail is spam and still you don't get it: MINOR ADJUSTMENTS AND SOFTWARE CONTRIBUTE TO THE PROBLEM MORE THAN THEY SOLVE IT. NO ONE HAS EVER WON AN ARMS RACE.

Okay, I'll stop shouting and ask, Do you like the fact that over 1/2 of your Internet expenses are supporting spam that is generated on behalf of Multinational corporations that already have billions of dollars in their fat wallets?

Don't take my word for it, you're SEO's research it for yourself. You're probably far better at using search than I am.

Then do the math and ask yourself how long consumers and small businesses can continue to subsidize big money interests?

Okay, so you think I'm a flake, fine, I out of here never to return, you win I loose.

But what if I'm right and all you so called SEO Experts are wrong, what then?

Just for the record, I was a partner in a web hosting / services company for nearly ten years, so I am very aware of the costs of spam.. But the cost of email spam in terms hours and bandwidth have no effect on the job of an SEO.. These are unrelated aspects of a more broad business..

Trackback spam can be stopped by simply disabling trackbacks.. Automated comment spam can be stopped with a 'good' captcha, challenge response system, or more evolved form of heuristic analysis similar to software like Spam Karma..

And I'm not an SEO, I'm a jeweler that studies SEs as more of a hobby..

And no one here said you were a flake.. It's a shame that you have chosen to leave rather than debate the subject reasonably..

And finally, SEO will evolve just as it always to take in to account whatever comes down the pipe.. Whether it be spam or tweaks to the algorithm.. Just as it always has..

I definitely agree.. Don't use that automated ones... You have no assurance if it really works... It may hurt your site for that.... Use organic means of link building...
