    Anyone looked into guts of PINGing?

    I am not sure if there is anyone on this forum who went beyond the average line, but if not here - then nowhere.

    I need a person who knows what really stands behind PINGing?

    Not some general knowledge like "build WP blog, make big ping list, create content regularly and any time new content is added blog will be pinged and etc." We all know that, because we are darn smart

    I wonder if anybody knows how exactly pinging is done. What exactly (in terms of technology) happens? How exactly is the pinging command sent? What is its format?

    I do not expect someone to explain it in one post here, but some links to 'read more' will be a true blessing from above, because I lost the hope to find anything beyond averagely gossiped rumors.

    I think what you're referring to by "Pinging" involves the process of alerting search engines, news sites, other blogs, etc. that you've got a fress RSS feed or new content in your blog.

    For a great explanation regarding how and why, check out Understanding Blog and Ping : The Blog Herald

    While you're there, you can see their list RSS Ping sites : The Blog Herald of sites you can ping or simply use the service at Ping-o-Matic! to do it for you.

    I'm not an aficionado where blogging is concerned but I'm sure the information I've provided will be of some use. Go ahead and poke around at the Blog Herald. You should be able to find the information you need there.

    Pinging sites or blogs... means your are informing SEs and other sites that there's a new content in your site...

    Pinging uses the xml-rpc function to send a "ping" to the services in the ping list to notify them of new content. It's pretty simple, really.

    This document contains a writeup of the technology behind weblog pinging: Weblogs.Com XML-RPC interface, which seems to assume a working knowledge of SOAP and RPC calls.

    Re: Anyone looked into guts of PINGing?

    Thanks for the replies. I have a question that most probably is more to bj and/or wige

    Do you know how exactly the pining URL is formed/formatted in URL?

    For example, in the link that you, wige, gave there was a piece of text:
    weblogUpdates.ping (weblogname, weblogurl, changesurl=weblogurl, categoryname="none") returns struct

    But I cannot put commas or "( )" in the URL. And the text has commas and "(" and ")"

    Can you please give a sample of URL that goes exactly according to the rule that was shown above?

    Whenever I run into this type of thing, I find one that works and reverse engineer it. wordpress has an xml-rpc.php in its installation. ModX has a snippet that does the same thing. Maybe tearing them apart will give you your answer.

    You could try the following PHP code:

    Code:
    function weblog_ping($server = '', $path = '') {
    	$blogname = "My Blog Name";
    	$blogurl = "http://www.blogdomain.com";

    	include_once ('class-IXR.php');		// --- download this file at: http://scripts.incutio.com/xmlrpc/

    	// using a timeout of 3 seconds should be enough to cover slow servers
    	$client = new IXR_Client($server, ((!strlen(trim($path)) || ('/' == $path)) ? false : $path));
    	$client->timeout = 3;
    	$client->useragent .= ' -- phpAddEdit/0.9b';

    	// when set to true, this outputs debug messages by itself
    	$client->debug = false;
    	$client->query('weblogUpdates.ping', $blogname, $blogurl);
    }

    weblog_ping("rpc.pingomatic.com","/rpc");
    weblog_ping("rpc.technorati.com","/rpc/ping");
    weblog_ping("api.my.yahoo.com","/rss/ping");
    	/*
    	weblog_ping("rpc.weblogs.com","/RPC2");
    	weblog_ping("ping.blo.gs","/");
    	weblog_ping("xping.pubsub.com","/ping");
    	weblog_ping("www.blogdigger.com","/RPC2");
    	weblog_ping("api.feedster.com","/ping.php");
    	weblog_ping("rpc.blogrolling.com","/pinger");
    	weblog_ping("www.blogstreet.com","/xrbin/xmlrpc.cgi");
    	weblog_ping("api.moreover.com","/ping");
    	weblog_ping("ping.weblogalot.com","/rpc.php");
    	weblog_ping("rpc.icerocket.com:10080","/");
    	weblog_ping("topicexchange.com","/RPC2");
    	weblog_ping("www.newsisfree.com","/xmlrpctest.php3");
    	weblog_ping("rpc.blogbuzzmachine.com","/RPC2");
    	weblog_ping("ping.syndic8.com","/xmlrpc.php");
    	weblog_ping("ping.rootblog.com","/rpc.php");
    	weblog_ping("www.blogsnow.com","/ping");
    	*/
    Note that I have commented out many of the ping targets because pingomatic will take care of most of them I think. Also, for some generally good information about this issue, check out:
