I don't think I have ever heard anybody play the harmonica in real life.

Then you owe it to yourself to! Look for folk, blues!, jazz and even serious classical arrangements. You'd be amazed what these instruments can be made to do. Experienced 'harp players' have an array of breathing techniques, such as circular breathing and rhythmic breathing so they can both draw out a note or phrase, or pump it to the beat. Try doing that on a harmonium!

Truly, get ye to a library! Feast on the wonders these little handheld instruments can purvey.
