    Re: Reputation System Details

The system is weighted against negative votes as it is. The system is designed to be more of a 'body of work' kind of thing. Isolated incidents of votes in either direction shouldn't have significant impact.

Yours is a good example. It took you a lot more votes to get a negative rating than it took positive votes to get you out of it.

One change I am considering on the system is further restricting it's use to more established members. In other words - raising the post count required to leave reputation scores.

Still evaluating things. So far it hasn't been much of a problem - for most people.

In your case, you got a few negative rep votes over your spammy post:

"One short form gets you up to 5 quotes from leading designers. No obligation to buy. Don’t waste time looking for designers and posting on message boards; let them come to you! Get the best price and design firm possible!

    FreeDesignQuote.info

So you spammed the board, got some negative feedback to let you know it wasn't appropriate and since then have recovered back to a 0 very easily -- all on an account with just 50 or so posts.

That tells me things are working just fine.

    Question Re: Reputation System Details

Mike you honestly have a good point. The post that was considered spam was in a forum where I felt it was an appropriate post. But that’s long gone now, no need to beat a dead horse.

I think your feedback system would be much better if you didn’t allow negative feedback until you were a member for X amount of time or had X amount of posts or BOTH! I also think the “unnecessary” negative feedback would be reduced if the person who left that feedback was associated with their username.

My questions …What is the purpose of this rep-rank system? When I read a comment or post, I look at the number of posts the person has made, researched their comments and posts before I determine that they are legit and know what they are talking about.

The purpose of the rep rank system is just another means by whic people can evaluate the veracity and reputation of a post/poster.

A high post count does not always mean that the poster is knowledgeable -- it just means they post a lot. Sure, you can research and spend time investigating the reputation of a poster by reviewing their past posts, how people reacted to them and what the general consensus was in the end -- etc, etc

But that takes a good amount of time and effort. The RepRank is just a little extra something to give you a quick picture about that person's reputation here. It's not the be all end all of anything. It isn't to say somebody should be ignored or have their words taken as law based on it -- it's just a tool.

    Re: Reputation System Details

Mike I am going through some old posts and seeing some bad advice. I want to negative rep these members but I am getting a message saying a comment must be left to leave negative rep. I have commented on all of these threads in the past. Any ideas? Do I need to comment the same day to leave rep? If so that is not good.

If you leave a negative rep you have to say why when you do it. That's intentional.

Huh? So I should post a post in the thread about why I don't like the memebers post. Then I can post negative rep that day in that thread? I guess so, but the post may seem mean or demeaning.

you dont have to post in a thread to leave a rep score. I meant leave a comment on the rep score note, not in the thread itself. when you click the rep button, it asks you for a comment. negative scores require comments.

Jaan, going back into old posts and leaving a negative -that's not on -I'd be back to minus 30.
Seriously do them as and when you see a good or a really bad one. Don't go bone digging!

Mike I see that it requires comment, but it is just a flat prompt with nothing more than an OK button. Kind of like the one we get when we try to rep someone to many times.

No I am not digging. I am just talking about 3-4 days. Sometimes I cant get back to the forum everyday as you may see.

The dialog should show the two button options (I approve/I disapprove) and then a text entry line titled "Your comments on this post"
