Any advantages to editing ODP or others?

Sorry if this has been discussed already, I couldn't find a thread...

Is there any particular advantage (search engine wise for my sites) to being an editor for DMOZ or other directories?

I signed up with joeant.com so I could get some experience in writing submittal requests. They put me to work immediately :-) But I'm restricted to one topic so I can't (yet) submit all my urls for free.

I also signed up for ODP but have not heard back yet.

I signed up mostly because I like the idea of human-edited directories rather than pay-to-be-on-top listings. But I'd like to know if there might be some additional benefit to my personal sites that I submit ...

There is no advantage to your sites ranking if you are an editor. Unless you edit in a category and you include your own site (which you are allowed to do under the guidelines, but you have to treat competitor sites equally) - BUT, if this is the reason you applied to be an editor ... then go away, DMOZ do not want you.

I have heard of one senior editor who submitted one of there own sites to a category that he/she does not edit in .... they have been waiting 2 years ... so even being an editor in another category does not get you an advantage.

You will hear scuttlebut about how corrupt so many editors are ... now and then it does happen and they get booted - but it is only a very small minority. Most allegation of editor misbehaviour made in forums are never backed up with facts.

From my personal experiances with dealing with DMOZ editors (the minority) - I found them imporlite and having a serious attitude problem. More and more people are getting hacked of with this attitude and are hopeing that the likes of Google will depend on this service far less in the future.

I wouldn't bother with DMOZ unless you enjoy being insulted...

I did, in fact, post my major reasons for signing up to be an editor with OPD and joeant.com - my primary reason was NOT just to help my own sites. I just wanted to know if there might be a corollary benefit by participating.

I did not appreciate the reply that was basically another DMOZ bashing and not an answer to my question - I think there's another forum for that, right?

But I appreciate your time in preparing a response.

I have at one time or another scaned all the DMOZ threads at many different forums - does not matter what the purpose of the thread is, its always degenerates into DMOZ bashing ... DMOZ must be really important if it generates this kind of passion :-)

I edit a small to average size category with subcategories, that I am "proud" of. I have rejected half the submitted sites and added a lot of sites that were not submitted to "round" off the categories to be an up-to-date and complete resource of all the key sites and topics in that area. I get a buzz when I come across a site that links to MY category as a resource (no-one really owns a category). I see my role as making a resource and building a category for a searcher/surfer and not as a listing service for webmasters. I will soon put a proposal to the internal editors forum to re-organise the categoy and subcategory to make it even better... then maybe I apply for another category, if they will allow me (and they don't always do that - its called quality control). All sites submitted to my category are listed or rejceted within 12 hrs (I check 2x a day) ... 1000-4000 sites do get added daily to DMOZ (despite the scuttlebut of the volunteer editors being lazy).

...most of what you read in forums are the exception and not the rule....enjoy being an editor.
