index.(html | php | etc...) Bad? Duplicate Content?

When looking up some information on '.htaccess' files recently I stumbled across an article on how to use mod_rewrite to keep the index.html/php/asp/whatever page from showing up as it supposedly could cause duplicate content problems.

I suppose it's because having multiple "index.html" files on a server could look bad - although the actual content could be unique ...

Since I've never really heard about this before, or thought about it long:

Has anyone ever experienced that as a reality, or is this another unproven "possibility"/theory?

Hard to tell if that is true any more but better safe then sorry. It is still a good idea to redirect /index.xxx to / for usability and consistency's sake anyways.
