    Yet another Firebird name change

Mozilla has just released version 0.8 of its new standalone browser. And has once again changed the browsers name. Now Firebird is called Firefox. Weird people.

    Reason given...

Apparently the reason behind the name change was "to avoid overlap with another open source project"
so... we'll have to start promoting this browser all over again! - the process of web evangelism must continue! :o)

The following is taken from a press release on the Mozilla site:

Mozilla Firebird evolves into the new Firefox 0.8 release. Thunderbird 0.5 released.

February 9, 2004 (the Internet) - The Mozilla Foundation today announced the immediate availability of a new preview release of its next generation web browser, Mozilla Firefox. Mozilla Firefox 0.8 represents the bleeding edge of Internet technology and raises the bar for ease of use, performance, robustness and standards compliance.

They went through this once before in April of last year when the project was called Phoenix. Now it seems that the FirebirdSQL Foundation has been prodding them gently in to not using their name for the Project.

An article on their campaign to persuade Mozilla.org to stop using the Firebird name: http://www.mozillazine.org/talkback.html?article=3086

Now that they have changed the name to Firefox...I wonder if Firefox Communications will file a protest. Firefox is involved in Novell Network software including server gateways and such.

Why don't they just call the browser what it really is....Mozilla?

Because it's not Mozilla. If you were going to name it anything it would be Gecko after the rendering engine. My biggest gripe about the name change is having to add it to my browser detection scripts.

Firebird/Firefox still uses a directory called Phoenix to store your profile information.

Firefox, sort of reminds me of (one of my heroes) Clint Eastwood. Could this be a case of:

Did I count five browsers, or did I count six.

Okay, I can't remember the movie very well hahohehe.

IE6, IE5x, Opera, Mozilla, Firebird, Firefox, Nutscrape 6, Netcrap 7 (the last).

    Don't forget Mac IE's.
    I think I'll go rent a movie :o)
Babies don't need a vacation, but I still see them at the beach... it pisses me off! I'll go over to a little baby and say 'What are you doing here? You haven't worked a day in your life!'

Mozilla sounds like they are playing one wicked game of Pokemon. (Gotta catch them all)
