This sounds a bit dated though:
If you use the NOODP tag, 9 times out of 10 you'll end up with your meta description in the snippet. This may not effect your placement but can drastically effect your click-through rate.Next we have two name values: keywords, which these days is mostly useless, ironically, and description, which is still somewhat useful.

Just to add to this topic. My recent testing and even Google themselves does verify that you should use UNIQUE description as a key way of not allowing your pages fall into the Supplemental Index. No ore boiler plate descriptions!!
