Requirements for a Live Video Broadcasting Project

    Hi,

    I need your help...

I am considering a web project which involves Video Live Streaming... Let me explain it more.

I would have a website where visitors come and subscribe to live video broadcasting of sports matches right on their PC. Now I would like to break this project to major parts or components. What I have done is divided it in the following components:

    1. Media Server (License price for 100 concurrent users=???)

    2. Website with Programming.(Days of programming, not design, needed)

    3. HUGE Bandwidth (For 100 concurrent users=???)

    4. Hardware to record the matches(which hardware=???)

    5. Connection of hardware to Server (???)

    6. Dedicated Server.(Specification=???)

Please do add to the list if you think I have missed something or remove if there is anything not needed. Also I am not able to track down the cost. Please do help me in this regard too. Your help would be much appreciated...

    Thanks,

    Khurram.

No need to reinvent the wheel. You can purchase bandwidth from a company that already specializes in streaming, such as http://www.vitalstream.com

They do streaming from everyone from CNN to public access channels, like http://www.quote-unquote.org in Albuquerque.

My project is one that requires I use live streaming. I recently have produced my show at the local public access channel, now have live streaming for my show and pay nothing.

    http://www.talkshowthis.com

For archived segments of the show and the hosting of the site, I use dreamhost.com which offers unlimited domain name hosting and more bandwidth and storage than I will every humanly need... despite the demand of my site.
You can either have what you want in this world, or the reasons why not.

    A few answers

I don;t have time to give you a detialed response, but I'll give youa few tidbits form my years doing streaming video.

One note: Before you get too deep into the technical issues, makes sure it's legal ;-)

    1. Media Server (License price for 100 concurrent users=???)
WindowsMedia services is free I believe- it comes with a Windows2003 'license'

RealServer is pretty pricey for that many concurrent users, but is a viable option.

Lots of streaming companies will host a live event for you- all you do is send them a video stream to rebroadcast. That might be your best best to solve the media server/bandwidth issue.

    3. HUGE Bandwidth (For 100 concurrent users=???)
    Multiply 100 x max bitrate + 10-20% for overhead.

    4. Hardware to record the matches(which hardware=???)
Check out the Osprey line of video capture cards. They are the best for live video capture. Put it in a fast computer (P4) with plenty of RAM.

    5. Connection of hardware to Server (???)
You need a local box to encode the video stream and send it to the server box. This is all done via your internet connection.

    6. Dedicated Server.(Specification=???)
Fast, lots of RAM, fastest network card you can find. Even look at two network cards, one for TCP/IP one for just outbound traffic.

You won't need hardware if you use a service like vitalstream.com. I don't know what their cost is, you will need to contact them yourself.

Why go through all that time and expense?

When a company has already set all this up for you for a fraction of the cost?

Live broadcasting with pay per view capability. Set to private, public, ppv or a combination of the three. And People can search by category as well as subscribe to rss feed for the broadcast schedule. Choose dial up through broadband. Whatever you need for viewers. Viewer interaction. Polling questions. Push through commercials. etc. etc.

Not to mention, this dosen't take bandwidth on your site. Awsome technology! Url in sig.

    Good luck,
    Angela

I and my team run a video website albeit not live - VOD. However, many of the recommendations here are good. VitalStream is expensive. Consider how large your audience will be and nail it because if you don't have enough bandwidth - 100 concurrent viewers looks very small for sports - when viewer number 101 logs in, you are going to have streaming problems and people will likely drop off. What then are you going to do with the copy on the HD? As someone said, make sure that you have the rights to the content.

Vmdirect's suite of products will definately assist you in getting set up at an affordable price and eliminate the need for your own server hardware.
I personally would look into the copyright issues though, before you embark on this project - it will save you a lot of heartache in the future.
Best of success with your project.

    Hi,

For content legacy, I have already this point in my to-do list to negotiate with some channels, but will act only after I get total control of this idea and budget.

I really appreciate all your responses buddies. If you have any more then go ahead and post it down.I am in contact with some solution providers right now and will see if they can give me a competent quote with quality service. So if you are a Solution Provider, do ping me at my email address in my profile.

I will get back every now and then to this topic and post down the progress made so far.

Thanks again. All your help really appreciated.
