I missed this post and happened across it, trying to find another.

I highly recommend the article posted by the original poster, it's informative and interesting.

Here's a quote about different kinds of webmasters from the article:

The "Entrepreneur" is strongly motivated toward building and retaining an audience, and is less interested in using technologies just because they're new.

The "Designer" is strongly motivated toward the timely delivery of visually appealing web sites that meet the business requirements of clients.

Those are pretty fair synopses, but I think success requires a mix of all of the above.
