    How to find Pantone References

    Hi,

Can anyone tell me how to find the pantone reference of a colour in either Adobe Illustrator CS2 or Photoshop CS2.

    Thanks

Using the white pointer, select one of the colours and then see what appears in the colour tab (F6 in Illustrator).

If the box shows only a CMYK split then you need to write down the 4 values. For instance, C = 0, M = 100, Y = 63, K (black) = 29 is the CMYK split for the Pantone colour 201.

Open up a Pantone swatch; Window>Swatch Libraries>Pantone Solid coated (use List View) for instance and then, by eye, try and find the nearest colour to the one you're dealing with. Select this colour and then, in the colour tab, click on the 4 colour square, just under the percentage box. This will give you the CMYK split of the Pantone colour you've just selected. Compare this with the written down values you took earlier.

You will probably need a bit of trial and error until you arrive at a similar CMYK split. (Don't be concerned too much about a few percent either side).

This will give you a fairly close Pantone match to a CMYK colour.
