How do I search as if I am in a different country?

    Hi there,

I am working for a client who obviously, wants to be top for his keyword, on looking at his choice of generic keyword (not on country specific) he comes in at 6th place.

But interestingly enough 4 of the top 6 listings are based in New Zealand where we are.

Now I may be cynical, but I wouldnt have thought that these 4 sites were likely to be the most prominent in the world.

It seems that Google provides certain weightings based on searchers country even when the country specific isnt checked.

If this is the case is there a way to see the results as if in the US or England as this si where his export market is?

    Cheers

Steven I don't understand the question? If your looking to search US and UK from another country, just use those version of Google.com and Google.co.uk.

Google is always working to tweak the SERP's without you knowing and you will see a biased to New Zealand websites in the SERPS when searching from New Zealand no matter which version of Google you are using.

Would he fool Google if he used a proxy server in another country?

If he would you will find a list of free public proxy servers here -> http://www.publicproxyservers.com

    Avoiding the bias

    Hi there,

Thanks for the tips guys, yes it is the bias I am trying to avoid. My customer only focuses on Non New Zealand customers due to distribution arrangements here, so I am working on the site from a global perspective (especially US and Canada)

I thought there may be some tools you could use to fool Google as to where you were searching from. I'll try the proxy idea, but it seems a logical need in SEO.

    Cheers

Do your search that way you would normally. Example search phrase little red wagons.

The address bar with contain the following URL: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&l...ns&btnG=Search

In order to do a country specific search, say UK, just add &gl=uk to the end of the URL.

The address bar will now contain the following URL: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&l...G=Search&gl=uk

You can use this method for any other 2 letter country code.
