Open source and open DNS servers

I wanted to have a spellcheck on one of my forums recently and I couldn't do it because it was "open source" and it would create security issues on the server. Recently, I just read about www.dnsreport.com and that it is very important that your site have a "PASS" the "Open DNS servers" line.
Are these related?

"open source" means just that. THe source code for any open source project is available to anyone use or to make changes to as they see fit. It sounds to me like your host is overly paranoid or runs a really tight ship and allows no "open source" projects to be installed on their servers.

What forum software are you using and what spellcheck addition (if any) were you looking to integrate?

Regarding the "Open DNS Servers" having a pass in that field actually means your dns servers are "closed".

Do a lookup on my domain easywebdev.com on dnsreport to see a properly configured server output (barring the warning about nameservers on seperate class c ip blocks, I use a single datacenter in the US)

I am using SMF forum software and the spellcheck I was looking to integrate is PSpell and ASpell. They said "No open source at all".

Wow! Very clean report. I have several different sites and all got a "PASS" in the "Open DNS servers" line except for one that is hosted by ixwebhosting. I wrote them to ask about it and I got this reply...
"Yes, our DNS servers are open - what problem do you have with this?
It does not matter for your domain , your hosting service and so on."

Not knowing anything about this stuff, should I have a problem with it? Or is there nothing to worry about?

Also, I didn't understand whether the two are related? I understand that having a "PASS" means that my dns servers are "closed". My GoDaddy sites were some that got a "PASS" on the dnsreport.com test. Is this because GoDaddy runs a tight ship about not allowing open source (meaning the servers are closed). Or are these 2 completely unrelated issues? (i.e. Could a host not allow open source, but still get a "FAIL" on the "Open DNS servers" line?

Alot of people have had issues running open-source software with GoDaddy, which is one reason they are not always recommended.

Ironically, I had to install pspell on one of our servers for a client.
