Has anyone had any experience with or heard anything about whether or not Google penalizes sites that use the word "Directory" or "Companies" in the HTML title or meta description?
Just trying to get some ideas before we start revamping things.

No and if someone says so ask for proof.
The fact is the content behind these websites that may use directories or companies in the meta tags is usually the problem.
I'm not quite understanding your response. We operate an industrial directory and engineering resource at www.zycon.com. I am just trying find out whether or not having any of the words "Directory", "Suppliers", "Manufacturers", or "Companies" affects a website in G's SERPs. Some of our competitors just list the product name or variants of it, and sometimes include the name of their site, i.e. ThomasNet, GlobalSpec, MacRaes. The companies that don't use "Directory" in the title seem to always be higher. Is this by coincidence, or do these companies know something we don't?Originally Posted by incrediblehelp

Having "Directory", "Suppliers", "Manufacturers", or "Companies" in your title doesnt give you any extra boost in the SERP's.
Many factors help you rank well in the SE's. Having your keywords in your title tag is just one of hundreds of factors.
No, they don't penalize you.
