location of server - does it affect ranking?

I run a number of small websites, mostly small businesses but also a couple of affiliate sites selling products in the US and UK.

Currently my servers are all based in Europe (UK I think) and I'm wondering whether moving some of my US sites to servers over there will help my rankings in any way? All my sites are fairly well optimized and search engine friendly / accessible (as far as I can tell) so I'm looking for that extra little hit...
