Double Click Generation - Trigger Happy

    Hey there,
I was watching my dad on the net the other day and he double clicks everything. He doesn't know that links only need clicking the once to activate, unlike a desktop program. I remember thinking at the time that this would lead to problems if he decided to click on adsense ads while surfing, adwords clients would be paying twice right?
Well it was completely by fluke that I stumbled across: http://adwords.blogspot.com/2006/03/...id-clicks.html

So, I'm just wondering whether a lot of click fraud and the reason for a lot of accounts being closed could just be a few regular, older visitors that think everything should be clicked twice - the DoubleClick generation if you will!

    What d'ya think?

    Hi There,

Well, I am from the "double-click generation" too, so would you please be so kind to tell us when and why you should click only once or when/why we need to click twice.

I have always wondered about this, but never have heard the reasons why.

    Thanks,

jkomp I am failing to see why double clicking on ads (by accident, no fraud) should result in accounts being closed? Also whose account is being the closed? The AdSense account holder? The AdWords account holder? I assume your talking about the AdSense account holder. The AdWords acount holder would be the one putting in the gripe, even though in this case he doesnt have one.

Sure many of us see that dreaded double click from our AdSense accounts and it sucks.

I am sure to get the Google AdWords anti-fraud system to kick in, the spamming would be much more than a couple of double clicks, like a automatted spider.

WPW's own David Utter has an interview on the subject. Also another thread.

I work with many beginners. So many double click! (I don't have any idea of what that does to ads and click fraud.)

I always tell my customers to click once. If it doesn't do what you want, then click twice! On the Internet, you never need to double click. And you generally only need to double click when you want to "open" something.

I began my double-clicking career at age ten when I got a Macintosh SE for my birthday (this was 1985) and double-click was a concept that was new even to DOS veterans and alien to the Microsoft OS.

I still will occasionally double-click when a single will do but I now use a trackball that has a button programmed to double-click with just one click and is adjustable for interval.

Briefly: Icons in Windows Explorer (distinct from Internet Explorer) should be double clicked, links should be single clicked though Windows has an option that allows icons to be single clicked. Your desktop is a part of Windows Explorer, as are windows that open when you double-click a file folder icon.

In the adwords blog they say, "Our aim in fighting invalid clicks is broader and includes clicks that we suspect may have been deceptive or malicious, as well as clicks that we deem invalid for other reasons, such as accidental double clicking on an ad." - As this is an aim I assume they are still having troubles seeing the difference between invalid clicks (clickers fault) and click fraud (adsense publisher's fault). If your site is double-click generation targetted (i.e. a slightly older market) then it is likely your account will be flagged and Google may issue a ban - I would imagine the Google isn't scared of banning a few innocent publishers in its attempts to beat click fraud.

    Hiya,

isnt click fraud when the account holder recieves too many clicks from the same IP address? too many does not mean 2? it means 10 or 15 or maybe 30
    right?

    thanks

Interestingly enough though - my girfriend is 25 and she double clicks web links. It's not just the older generation!

It's strange as well though how such a fickle thing can make me so irate - CLICK IT ONCE DAMNIT!

lol - i am a happy clicker. but i dont double click. I just enjoy the clicking process.

I have to admit, once i started to learn more about PPC, the less I started to click on the adverts and chose to click on organic search links. I dont wanna cost the companies money.. sad but true ;)
