2 Websites, 1 Webhost - Will They Suffer The Same Fate?

    Hi Guys,

I hope someone can help me with this question.

I have one site which ranked very well with Google from February 2004 - March 2005. After an algorithm update, it lost 95% of traffic from Google and is now hardly receiving any traffic from Google at all.

It still gets spidered by the Googlebot and ranks well only for the name of the site. But apart from that, nada. I'm almost convinced it's over for that site and have actually stopped working on it.

My question is, if I start a new site about a new topic( with a new domain ), but is hosted on the same hosting as the first site, will they suffer the same fate? Will Google consider it as part of the old site and treat it as such? or will it be considered a totally new site?

    Thanks a lot

Your new site, assuming you have a new domain name and IP address, will not be related to any other site, simply because you're on the same hosting service. Larger hosting services often provide hosting services for thousands of web sites. If there were any issue related to using the same hosting service, you would already have heard about it.

If you put a few identical pages on two different domains, then you potentially have a problem. But, even in this case (if you have different IP addresses), it's very unlikely that you'll have a problem.

Of course, if you put up an identical web site at two different domain addreses, then you're asking for trouble.

    Thanks for the reply Ron.

The thing is, I do have the same hosting service and the same IP address (I think ).

    Let me explain.

My first website is www.xyz.com and I bought hosting for it. This first hosting offers a lot of disk space and allow me to host many domain names.

So I bought www.abc.com, but I didn't buy new hosting as it can still be accommodated in the hosting provided for by the first domain ( the web hosting service allows up to 20 domains I think ).

In this scenario, is it then considered a different site?

    Thanks a lot

Your new site, assuming you have a new domain name and IP address,

Aimee, I believe if all you do is add abc.com to your list of domain names, you will not be changing ip addresses. I think that if you start from scratch, you will need a new ip address.

Ahhhh, Could it be that Aimee has solved their own mystery?

If you bought domain www.abc.com and www.xyz.com, and parked both of them to look at (point towards) your website content, it will appear to Google that you have multiple domain names with identical content. This will cause your site to be dropped off of the face of the earth in the search engines.

On another note, why do people omit their URL's from their postings..........? I always like to look at the actual sites/situation before responding. In this case I made an exception........a weakness of mine, I suppose.

    multiple domains

Here is something to consider. If you have your own box and host several sites on it with the same IP or IP block will that do harm to the sites?
No, because if it did you could never get anywhere with shared hosting environments that host hundreds of sites and we all know that is not the case. I have many sites on one box some are doing well and others not as well. If you are going to drop that loosing site. Get a new domain name take the content from the loosing site and rewrite it so it is not identical to your looser site.
that way search engines will not ban you for duplicate content. Just my 2 cents worth.

I agree with Pcman on this.

I host many many domains using the same IP. As long as the content is different for each domain you shouldn't run into any problems.
