Google is working on a project to create its own global internet protocol (IP) network, a private alternative to the internet controlled by the search giant, according to sources who are in commercial negotiation with the company.
I wish them Good luck

Eh, doesn't seem so far-fetched to me. Look at AOL. Those guys have managed to hold on to their market and they're not even fully committed to broadband, and this is basically the same concept. A controlled internet experience/environment. Never underestimate the ambition of the powerful, or the ignorance of the masses. It's a common mistake to dismiss the lowest common denominator (i.e. Who would buy into a Googlenet? Probably a lot more people than you think...)Originally Posted by kgun
That's not to say that I believe Google is building a Death Star over the moon of Endor or anything. I just wonder how long they'll stick to their motto of "Don't be evil." My guess is until being good stops making them money, and they realize just how much more money being evil is worth.
But hey, like you said: don't believe everything that you read. I got a parking violation and a maggot on my sleeve...![]()
Isn't "Don't Be Evil" the returning Anti-Christ's motto? :)

Its only prudent business that Google diversify their areas of operation and since they have a worldwide presence already a dedicated Google network could make a lot of sense.
If they can indeed produce a $100 Google cube which will offer access to Googles service why not. But IMO you can forget about the idea of Google freezing out sites that do not pay, that is a very slippery slope indeed and who is going to use a service which does not have the greatest number of sites?
People who don't know better. Look at the millions of AOL users out there... and go back even farther - remember Prodigy?Originally Posted by Mel
I don't expect Google to block out sites at the outset... but they'll start with Parental Controls... and then of course there could be government limitations, perhaps on a state and then federal level...
Didn't Google limit the search results in China or something to that effect, in order to appease the local government?
My point is that blind people never knew what something looked like, and the average internet user barely knows how to fire up a browser, much less try and keep track of whether a site is available or not. My buddy's dad always used to refer to the internet as "Yahoo" simply because Yahoo was the home page on his browser.
I *could* start throwing in political references, but I don't think it's necessary. Besides, never mix church and state, right?![]()
The question of what is "evil" will likely be answered by Google. Rather a nifty PR spin on their part will make text ads served to your desktop appear more "helpful" than evil - or so they hope...lol
Google to take over the world? Maybe just the internet.
May be a better heading, would have been:
Google going to make their own extranet?
P.S. IMO opinion, the bigger Google gets, the more bureaucratic (nearly a "natural law"?) it will be. That is their biggest enemy.
Examples:
GPay

VoIP

Example:
More and more people leave MS I.E. because it is loosing ground. I still use it because that is the explorer that I know best and it is best for me. IDN's = International Domain Names. Try LeOgRør in
- I.E.
- FireFox
- Opera
Do you see a difference in English speaking countries? There is a big difference in Norway. It is about digital branding in non Englsih speaking countries.

Oh, I can completely agree with that statement. You're absolutely right. Proof of this is the interminable beta status of every one of their projects while they keep rolling out more and more services. Maybe they should just change their name to Google Beta?Originally Posted by kgun
Definitely, though, that is their biggest obstacle/enemy, and it will only get worse as they continue to grow and expand. Good call.
Ah ha, this ties in very well with 'Could Google Kill the Web?'.
If they transferred a majority of users from the old web to their own one then surely they could kill it. It makes sense for google to do this but I'm not sure i would make great sense for others to follow. If this did happen we would eventually have other companies doing the same. Potentially we could have a virtual world with companies owning and running their own virtual countries.
