Asp.net vs. PHP: Pros and Cons

    Hi there,

My website www.petsell.com is currently coded in Cold Fusion. I've spoken to several people who think the language is rather robust and still a viable option, but many programmers aren't familiar with it, and hosting services often don't support it, or cost more to do so.

I've decided to re-code the site to make it more scalable/manageable. The programmer I am working with can code it in either ASP.net or PHP. My question is which of the two languages is a better fit for my site? Or any site in general.

It seems that most large corporations prefer ASP.net and most of the younger/hipper programmers out there prefer PHP.

Does anyone know if one runs faster than the other? If one leads to higher SERPs? Etc. etc.

    Thanks for your time.

Also, what would anyone out there estimate the cost to be to re-code my particular site?

Well, you're definitely going to get the php-lovers and the asp-lovers.

Really, there's not too much difference, it will really boil down to personal preference.
Head to head, neither one has an edge really as far as serps and speed goes. This stuff, will depend on the programmer. Keeping the queries to a minimum and being on a fast server/ connection will help with speed.

With seo, it will depend on how the programmer codes the site. If he/she is not that well versed in seo, then it might be a wise decision to consult with an seo pro and possibly even have the seo and programmer work together on your project.

As far as cost.... that's a crap shoot, because it will depend on what's involved in the development and how full-featured it will be.

thank you for your response...I think I'm gonna go with asp.net. Seems like the bigger, badder language out there. Appreciate your time.

The choice of language will greatly affect the choice of server. If you are sticking to ASP.NET you are better of on a Windows server with IIS. There are options for running ASP.NET on Linux with Apache / mod_aspdotnet, but you're just adding another point of failure going that way (IMHO).

On the other hand PHP will run happily on both Windows / Linux.
