    Competitors techniques

Ok so my competitor is a family friend that created a website 3 years ago. He used to work for UPS and now he's doing very well and quit his UPS job. I told him I was going to compete with him in the same field and get the same outcome :) Now by using certain web site ranking software I noticed his web site traffic up to 6,000 uniques a day when he first started in 2001 and then again in 2005. How can I find out what advertising he's doing? Is there somewhere that says where all his traffic is coming from? I think he pays a company. Anything could help...cause he won't tell me.
    Thanks,
    Dustin

This opens a lot of questions. I have been wondering about my own competion
but have not had much luck finding out much.

For example, I have a darn good site, and get 160,000 visitors
a month. Yet for the main keyword I have on google I am on page 17.

The competitor that is #1 on google has very little content and the keyword
isn't even mentioned on his home page, the page that is linked by google. So how does he do it?
I would like to know. I have more links, and better links,
In every way I can check I beat him hands down.

But more to the point, you want to make money.

So why are you competing with your friend? If I were you
I would start a site that is similar but not competing
and make him a partner if he will teach you how to do it.

Stop being an idiot and start being a wiz.

Might just be a simple case of 'it looks easy when somebody else does it' . . Unfortunately you have probably lost a good source for advise.

    ok. ok

ok. ok. ok. It seems that the focus is more on the fact that my family friend wont tell me then on what I really wanted to know..."how does he do it" So I'll confess...I didn't tell him I was competing with him...Just kind of borrowed the idea...But he wont even notice even if I do make it...So anyway...How does one find out how his competitor advertises?
    Thanks,
    Dustin

    Do some research....

Start with looking at the site (and html code), url,
title, description, and how the key words are used.

Check in-bound links to the site.

Do some searches on various key words.

His "advertizing" could be as simple as having listings
on various directories and websites and/or PPC.
