RAM causing crashes?

I've just installed 512MB PC2700 Kingston memory into my XP pro PC in addition to the 2 x 256MB that was already in there.

Now when I'm using the PC, programs keep crashing randomly and I get that bloody error report thing up.

I had originally set the page file myself but now have allowed windows to manage it for me as I thought this was the reason for the crashes but it's still happening.

Is the memory faulty or is it because the old ram and the new ram are different makes? Can anyone help?

Does the system read the full RAM compliment?

If you go to Accessories > System Tools > System Information does it read the full 1GB?

It could be an issue of different Mhz of the chips or the schematic.

Are they all CL2 or CL3? Your motherboard may not be very forgiving if not.

Have you tried to run the 512 by itself? PC2700 RAM is cheap enough now that if the 512MB chip runs fine on its own w/out the two 256MB chips, you may want to replace them with a duplicate 512 by the same maker.

Yeah it picks it up in the boot and in windows.

The 2x256mb was running fine till i put the other 512mb in.

Dont know what you mean by CL2 and CL3, could you please explain.

Hi

You have to check your motherboard specs as to be sure if your new RAM can be used. Different RAM speed will cause this problem. It is always advisable to use the same RAM when upgrading as it can be incompatible with different ones.
