    NIC cards and slow start up

    Hello,
    Here is the situation:
    "One" computer on an office cable network system of "Three" looses its ability for internet connection. (There had been a power surge to the building,,but all where on surge protectors) Troubleshooting led to installing New NIC Card and now Internet Connection comes back up..but "Start-up" is EXTREMELY slow. With a major freeze point at background picture to desk top with no icons or system tray for at least 60 seconds. So I am wondering.....could Spyware have caused the NIC card going out, (and not the power surge). Also ran spybot and removed all crap that was found. Perhaps something still remains causing slow start up?? All maintenance, and virus scan and firewalls have been checked. System restore has not helped any either. Device manager shows no problems. Could previous spyware have caused conflicted files to create need for re-format?? (hate that option)Running an Intel Processor IV with 2.4 GH ...this is not it's usual start up speed .

    Suggestions welcome :)

    Have you tried swapping the hub port used by the 'slow' nic? It could be the nic itself is fine and that the port on the other side of the wire was damaged.

    I agree with lightning...
    Also, run msconfig and see what is starting up.
    Remove everything there and reboot.

    have run msconfig and have only basics running. I am not sure how to handle the hub port switch?? Should I go to system device manager.remove all ports.then re-start?? I need guidence here...:)

    Simply swap the cable of the hub port of the suspect PC with the one next to it. Reboot both computers. If the problem moves from the suspect computer to the one you swapped, it is a bad port.

    If you aren't sure about the hub ports, and wiring, the n unplug the computers nic cable and move the computer to one of the others close by. Plug in the 'good' computer's network cable into the suspected bad nic and reboot.

    Driving for speed.

    Try updating "Drivers" from their website.

    Likewise on all machines...

    Anything that came with a disk may be old, or even buggy, and cause problems.

    Try a cable change/swap.

    Place a different computer in the same place to see what happens.

    If all else fails.

    Back up files programs needed then format and reinstall.

    (sorry if you've done this already)

    I had a similar problem with some browser hijacking spyware which disabled the network card drivers on an office PC somehow.

    I used LSPfix and everything came back

    How does it boot when not logging into a domain? Try booting the computer into the local drive only and see if it boots ok. If it does, then it's a network issue. It's probably struggling to talk to the server/other machines and that's why it takes so long to boot.

    The surge may have damaged the motherboard. Try using the network card in a different pci slot or even change the motherboard. Then see how well it connects to the network. Hope this helps =)

    Did you resolve this problem? Or did you have to just wipe the whole PC?
