Does "free" help = right to be discourteous?

People do digress. This is why most clubs, organizations, and governing bodies utilize "Roberts Rules of Order" as a template for controlling the digressions. Committees without a chair accomplish less than one with a chairperson; and, it's debateable whether a committee accomplishes all that much anyway. However, since these forums aren't a committee, it's probably not applicable -- afterall, it's all just "free." There is no need to maintain a structure or courtesy, good manners, etc., it's all free. And, since it's mostly Mods and MVPs who are the major contributors AND digressors. Since they are the ones in charge, why does it matter? It's "their" show.

If this IS the case, then there is no need for moderators or rules. No need for threats to ban people for being discourteous. Make it truly free -- make it a free-for-all. Let everyone behave as they aren't allowed to in face-to-face situations. Let it rip! and let it die.

And if there is no connection...

I believe I have already answered that question as simply as I can. I cannot think of anything more to add to that right now. Except to say that if there is any connection, then I want to know about it just as much as you do.

    Next question.

As you know I have always been for Off-Topic Reform, but that is NOT an option that I personally agree with. I think that it should be discussed a little further and not rule it out as a possibility.

    different degrees of bad manners

No, Janeth - that is not what I meant. What I meant is that there are many ways to be rude or discourteous. Chronically posting offtopic when one hasn't even posted TO the topic in a legitimate manner, and if the post has nothing whatsoever to do with the thread, it's discourteous and lacking in respect to those working the thread. It's just "bad manners."

Let me reiterate. Humor is fine. It can be included within a legitimate post. But, the "bring in the clowns" type of off-topic posting is discourteous.
