Taking Advantage Of Our Old Pr4 Site. How?

    Hi,

We have an old site of ours that recently got a PR4 from PR3 stage. Now for some keywords the site is on google page 1, 2, 5, 6, 18 ...

We are coming out with our new website (same product, same keywords, different design, content and URL.)

Now ... if we change the WhoIs info for the old site so that google doesn't know it's our site .. how can we benefit from this situation?

The site URl we will come out with will have a PR of 0 as it's brand new (registsred a year ago but parked)

Should we put a text link to our new site from the home page of old site? SHould we have 2-3 links going to the new site from old site...? Basically, how can we benefot from what our old site achieved through the last 1.5 years?

    Thank you.

Why don't you relaunch the existing PR4 site?

This should get you maximum results.

We can't. We are now coming out with a new site for branding issues. So just trying to benefit from what we already achieved.

301 redirect would be the best then.

    How is it done?

And ... is it better than to have a text link pointing to the new site from the old?

If both sites are selling the similar items as suggested but the new domain is set up for more branding purposes I would definately go with a 301 redirect. Most of the LP & PR should transfer to new one. I would believe the history in the eyes might as well but I dont know that sure.

301 is accomplished from your server. Make sure the redirect is a 301 which is permenant. Bots should note the change and consider new domain has taken the place of the old domain.

To me the transfer is better than just linking from old site to new, especially if you are not going to redevelop the old one.

Yes. Just make sure that your anchor text is the same as the page title of the new site that you are linking to. I don't think you should have to update the whois...

    supernatural_247,

I disagree, but I am curious why you believe one link from an established domain is better than doing a 301 redirect. Especially noting since one link will not do much for ranking but a 301 will help transfer the LP to the new domain. This doesnt make sense unless you are trying to run 2 stores or a doorway page. Personally I would stick with a 301 and forsake whatever small benefit one link will do.

good point... one link will not be worth it. However, I am assuming that the old site had more than just a homepage, so put a few links to the new site (one to the homepage, the rest to other pages) in the footer of the old site so that these links are on all the old pages. Then create a 301 re-direct that will re-direct after 5 secs or so and a text link "Click here to go to the new site" that also links to the new site. therefore, you maintain relevance and increase the new site's visibility to search engines.

    Super,

Google will only count a few of the links. Sitewide links are not what they used to be. Also he has to be careful not to overlink the 2 domains togther especially if they are in the same C Block. Do that too much and it will never rank.
