~Designing for other parts of the World~

I'm currently designing a website that will be used in other parts of the world.

This site will be viewed frequently from every continent.

    In term's of using Hotspots...
Do you think the computer's of these countries will have IE4+ in order to view the special features?

    Good question.

But I don't think IE4 is even available anymore. I cannot remember which version is the cutoff. Then there is a seperate cutoff for even support of older browsers whether they are still available or not.

In the target countries, what types of systems are you looking at? New PC's or Refurbished? Do you have any idea...or not sure?

Also there is another thread running in one of the other Forums here. It concerns some action or motion that the United Nations is working on. I cannot remember where it is exactly...but UN is in the title of the thread.

This action involves Third World countries and mostly deals with impoverished peoples. They are discussing bringing the Internet to these people. The systems (if I remember right) will probably be low-end refurbished computers and probably NOT be runnning Windows as the OS. This will leave out Internet Explorer altogether as the Browser.

If you think this may affect you, you might want to look into it.

Thank you very much for the response.

I do not know what kind of computer's they will be using. But I do know, it is likely that every country with a computer will be viewing the site.

Perhaps a statistical question at www.answers.google.com is a good solution.

    Thank You.

    That will cost ya! ;0)

I am sure you will find the answers here and there and everywhere eventually.

If it is a pressing issue you may have to pay to have that done for you. Maybe someone here can suggest some other places you can go to in addition to Google's answers.

I think the best way to figure out the problem is to find out which operating systems are available across the globe or at least the most popular. And after that figure out which browsers are supported by those OSes. And then design the website to work with the most popular of those browsers.

I think so long as you keep the html clean and simple, nothing too fancy, you'll do just fine. Keep the javascript to a bare minimum if possible and maybe just simple CSS as well.
