    Hot Links

Is there code to include on web pages to stop people from using my bandwidth for their amusement? When I review my stats, I find that I am having a problem with hotlinks to my music and graphics.

When I go to their website to find contact information, it is often a private forum and I have no access. More often than not I cannot contact the individual who did create the link.

My policy against direct linking is clearly stated on my site. Visitors are free to download the music and graphics for personal use, but some go ahead and directly link anyway.

    Nancy,
You will have to use a program like hotlinkstop.
It has to be configured in IIS if you are running a windows server. If not, maybe someone else can shed some light.
If you are, I can install and configure this on your site for a small fee.
We can replace the image they are seeing with another image from another site, or just slag them off altogether. We can also replace the music file with a commercial for your website, or just give nothing.
Talk to me, email me tim@timmathews.com
PS, have a look at http://www.pickerelcreek.com and let me know what you think. It is my newest creation.
    Thanks!

    Hi Nancy,

There are a few server-side scripts available for just such a purpose. However, they will usually require you to work with your host to install them.

Before you do anything, explain the situation to your host and see if they have anything in place already (I've seen a few start to do this as of late) and if not, what they'd recommend and/or install.

I haven't used any myself so I don't know which are good or which are bad.

Can't you just re-write your htaccess file?

Yes you can use a couple lines of code in the .htaccess file.
