Does Google deliberatly "bury" relevant sites?

This is my first post so this may have been hashed many times - if so please forgive.
Beginning four years ago I maintained the #1 position for two entire years. Then as my site grew in popularity I began to see many paid sponsors showing up and then Google wiped my site off except for keywords and phrases that would not bring a good price-per-hit etc. Is it just me or has anybody else noticed this sort of thing?

Did you do anything to try and strengthen your hold on your SERP's for those two years? SEO is a constant battle with competitive KW's.

If you sit idle - even when you are at the top - your competition will blow right by.
